Assessing people using their knowledge and skills in an on the job situation is the key to competency assessments.
Every job requires a specific set of knowledge and skills. This varies depending on the type and complexity of the job. Competency assessments is all about providing a way of building the skills and knowledge people need to perform their current job
Competency assessments is an ongoing process of continually building knowledge and skills. The key to competency assessments is that it is based on actual skills and knowledge that a person can demonstrate in the workplace or other contexts. Recognition is given for prior learning, skills and knowledge that can already be demonstrated. This is different to other approaches where there is no requirement to demonstrate knowledge and skills.
Development needs are identified and the person uses a variety of sources, both on and off the job to develop the areas identified. After a period, the person is reassessed and if they can now demonstrate the skills, they are awarded competence.
